Default Help..New 73 Stingray Owner

I bought a 73 Stingray 80,000 miles from a friend for next to nothing. He need to get rid of it due to a divorce. Its a L48 350 Automatic. New paint job. I put new brakes, calipers, master cylinder, heater core, springs , shocks, bearings, power steering lines, rebuilt carb, fuel filter, came with tires almost new, cragar wheels in great shape, interior good, clean. Ran nice for first month. have it for two months . After long drive on the parkway would stall and flood at first light I stopped at. Re-built carb now running better but not 100%. Still stalls on occasion when stopped. Also backfires/hesitates. Not as bad though since carb was re-built (Rochester Quadra Jet) It handles very nicely when running well. Only put high octane gas in it. Have about $5,000.00 into it including purchase price. This car did sit for about 8 months before I purchased it. Any suggestions on my stalling problem or any suggestions at all. I can use any advice. My first Vette. Thanks guys.

At one point my 73 would just stall while I was driving. In most cases it would not start back for a while.

It was at a shop for a major tune up and the mechanic suggested the timing chain needed to be replaced. Had the timing chain replaced and no more issues.

If all you have is $5K including purchase price for a 73 into it, then stop whining!! I'll take it off your hands for $5K tomorrow!! You are ahead of the game to begin with.

Did you check the timing yet??

Check all of the basics, timing, compression, vacuum lines, float level adjustment, and see if you can get any history on the engine, rebuilt, last tune up....sound like the usual problems we all inherit with our C3's......good luck

When you get everything running great... invest some money and get a holley! I cannot tell you how much I hate the Rochester Quadra-junk

First check for vaccum leaks around the engine. The carb's throttle rods are know for wearing out the round holes in the baseplate. I had to have the hole drilled and bushed. Then make certain the carb is rebuild with the correct rods and jets and that the float level is correct. I also found an incorrect power piston spring and the check ball was missing in the carb. Once this was down the car ran fine. Also found the centrifuge advance in the distributor was a little slow to advance due to some rust on the bottom of the weights.

Quadrajets were probably good carbs when they were new. Problem is, they haven't been new for 20 years, and IMHO you can't effectivly rebuild a rochester. Throw it against the wall and put on a Holley 4175.

this may be borderline dis-service to Natfout60; many others have had success rebuilding Q-jets,
many love them, okay,
many hate them, okay,
like many, i've had both; whatever is desired results can be obtained by proper tuning on correct core.

Just ask Lars.

They're only "junk" if you don't understand them.

You say it is flooded so the float must be sinking when hot put in a new one with the correct float level.

Cragar chrome wheels. Classics. Those were THE wheels in 68-72 in my region for muscle cars.

it all sounds like tune up stuff.
follow 73jst4fun & RMS73 suggestions,

start with overall inspection, replace vacuum lines, hoses, etc.
get the mechanical and vacuum advance set and working,
then move to carb adjustments; choke adjustments can be a little aggrivating. i end up with one setting for summer and one for winter (or using the summer setting all year, but requires pedaling some).
if carb has brass float, replace with phenolic.

use the search to find links to papers on these subjects.
get a copy of the factory shop manual and assembly manual (AIM) as soon as you can. good luck . . .

Default Interior

Interior is black...In nice shape, clean but could use new seat covers. No cracks in the dash . Door panels need replacement as they are in fair condition.
I will restor the interior in the winter. Guys..what should this cost? Seat covers, seat backs, dor panels, carpet, minor trim and weatherstriping.
