Default Question on casting numbers from a newcomer.

My wife and I purchased a 1970 red vette about 5 months ago and we love it! It has been a dream of mine for 25 - 30 years which means that I am now into my second childhood. I have been reading this forum on many topics in hopes of learning more about our toy. I have a sheet on casting numbers for the various engine parts but am still a little confused as to what I actually have. The data plate below the shifter indicates a 350 - 350hp engine. The person we bought the car from said the engine had been changed but he believed it came from a 70 vette. According to my chart the 300 and the 350 hp both have the same block, intake, and exhaust casting numbers. It shows the same numbers on the heads too except the 350 hp shows an additional number (3927187). Here are the numbers off my engine. Engine stamp number: V1201TKL C8J127453. Intake-3965577 Exhaust-3989036 & 3846559 Bell housing-3899621 Trans.-392566 (cast) 3952659 (tag) Heads-462624. Now that's the one that has me stumped. Unless I'm not looking in the right place, that number doesn't match anything on my chart. I don't have the rear end number (unable to find it yet). The dist. is an Accel dual point #37100A with gear drive for the tach. I assume that is not factory. The block is 3970010. I have not been able to find a build sheet yet and the carb. has been changed out with a rebuilt quadrajet. That's all the info I have right now. Can anyone give me some insight as to what I have? From what I have read so far, there seem to be several of you that are very knowledgable with this sort of thing. I will appreciate any info. and look forward to more conversation in the future. Thanks! FUNRAY

Welcome to the forum. :) the 010 block is the correct casting number for '70 350 engines. The stamp pad indicates that it's a flint block (V) assembled on Dec 1 (1201) I don't recognize the TKL or the C8Jxxxxxx. On a '70 I'd expect V1201yyy 70S4xxxxx where yyy tells you Hp and Trans originally and xxxxx is the last 5 digits of the VIN. 70S4 is Chevy corvette, 1970 (0) - like in the '70 VIN #s. The dist sounds aftermarket. Depending on the engine Hp and trans & Ac or not etc... will require a different Q-jet part number. I don't remember the other numbers off the top of my head - I'll look them up later if someone else doesn't chime in first. :) You might also post in the Factory Correct Resto board on the forum - a lot of number / date enthusiasts hang out there too. :D

It sounds like what you really need is the NCRS Technical Judging Guide for '70-'72 cars. It's 100+ pages packed with all thenumbers and dates and codes for everything on / in / under the car. :D You can start with the Black Book for some of the basic engine codes. http://www.ncrs.org.

Also I'd like to invite you to join the '70 registry. GM didn't release color and other option distribution records for the '70 model year - so we're trying to statistically figure some of them out based on surveying '70 corvettes. You can see the data we're gathering online (click on the logo in my sig line to go there). I've got some color production stats online and Don did a bunch more analysis which I'll hopefully get online later this weekend. :) ~Juliet

Funray........Welcome to the forum. I myself have been here only a couple of weeks or so, and I'm finding I spend far to much time surfing here   But that's ok. The weather is gone, so driving is out for now and I gotta spend my time doin something :jester

Can't add much more to what's already been said. :( But if your car has it's original alternator you could possibly gleen something from the numbers to help a little.

1100884: 350ci, 370hp or air cond. (all) (370hp engine is for LT-1)

1100900: 350ci, 350hp motor

1100901: 350ci, 300hp motor

Again welcome aboard!

:U :U :U :U :U Sorry, I just like throwing up guys :D :D

Funray: Your TKL block is a 74, 78, or 80 350CID, 160-170hp truck block.
Welcome to the Forum. Cruise and enjoy your Corvette. Remember, Shark drivers wave!!!!

Clem, Thanks for the quick reply. Could you decipher your response a little for this "performance challenged" guy? Easy Mike says the block matches up to a truck block (bummer) but it sure doesn't run like any truck I ever drove. It idles very unlike a stock cam. It is beginning to sound like somebody has put together quite a puzzle. Thank you all for responding. I plan on getting on the Corvette registry soon, Juliet. Thanks again!

The TKL suffix only indicates a truck block, no telling what has been added to it over the years. Truck blocks usualy have stronger internals so they make a great start for a performance engine.

So it is not a Vette engine and deffently not the original engine. But it sounds like a good solid engine with who know what performance goodies added. Do drive it and enjoy it and don't worry about the numbers cr@p. Vettes were built to be driven.

Enjoy.

a 010 truck block should be a 4 bolt because chevy built all 4 barrel truck engines with 4 bolt mains.

Funray -- The TKL code only means the small blaock began its life in a truck. No shame in that. From what you have already observed, apparently a former owner tweaked it a bit.

Hi, and welcome.
It's good to see that another '70 has survived.

Well, when you put it that way I guess as long as it runs good and looks good I should just drive and enjoy it! From what Clem added, it's good to know that my block is more than likely a 4-bolt main. I'm waiting on my speedo to get back from a shop so right now the dash is sort of laying everywhere. I have lots I want to eventually do but for the most part, all seems in pretty good shape. Thanks again to all for your participation. Will keep viewing the forum and probably asking more questions later. Bye for now, Funray.
