Default Excessive Power Steering Play

Help, having power steering problems...very sloppy steering.

Rebuilt motor, detailed engine compartment etc. Replaced all hoses including power steering. Put it all back together.

Now....my power steering is real sloppy. Stomp the gas and I'm all over two lanes. No leaks by the way.

Any thoughts on what I need to check? Hate to think I need to rebuild something since it was fine before I started (go figure).

Looks like you need to balance the Ps valve

Jim Shea has a paper on it.

Cool...thanks. I take a read.

I didn't know if air was in the line and how to get it out. I'll read the paper and see if that helps.

Now that you have driven your vette, any air that was in the system has been mixed with the oil. The air will eventually work itself out of the system over the course of a couple days. Check your oil level, as the air works its way out, the oil level may drop a bit. (Foamy oil takes up more space than clear, clean fluid.)

Typically you would not think that your valve needs rebalancing. Give the system a day or so and see if it corrects itself with the air. If it still is erratic, then go after the control valve.

Jim...just finished reading your papers regarding air. I'll give at a couple of days and see if it corrects. Thanks, Doug

After replacing the lines i drove my car a week with air in the lines, darting when I hit the gas...... not fun!!!... bleed the system and re-adjust the control valve in under 1/2 hour & be done with it!!!

Jim.....you were 'exactly' right. Air in the line. I jacked the car up and rotated the wheel back and forth slowly 10 or 12 times with the car off. Each day it got better and its back to normal now. Good tight turning.
