72 went dead.
battery 2.2v!
cut holes in top.
failed connection between 2 cells.
drilled hole.
1/4-20 bolt.
fixed!
up to 12.71v.
1st time i've done this! was fun(dangerous acid), but i'm still going to get a new one soon but not today.
LOL, dammit man, I haven't seen anyone do that in years!
I used to work in a battery shop while in the service of my uncle and we did that kind of stuff all the time.
Congrats!
each battery cell = 2 volts. Use care, I have seen, and had, batteries explode. Anyone doing this, please wear safty glasses,,darkness can last a long time. All that being said..congrats, not a bad quick fix ,till payday, on a "still good" battery.

Be very careful !!!
If that battery goes low on charge there will be a bubble of hydrogen gas sitting there. If the acid eats that bolt in two and it arcs you could have an explosion. You can buy a battery for $50

well
your theory was tested when the rivit failed
Duh! Batteries fail all the time and they don't explode. you should be very red-faced.

i never said u guys should do this!
i just was irked that it failed and i wanted to try to fix it. not suggesting it is "worth it"
it was just another battery experiment for me. see my site, page down, for other battery experiments way beyond your capabilities.
A drill has sparks inside when running, a battery has explosive vapors coming off of it. Get too close and, Well you get the idea ! I had a battery explode in my shop when I was clear across the shop grinding and somehow a spark must have found it's way over there. They sound like a land mine.
if u guys are blowing them up(usually by hooking up backwards or overcharging) then consider taking the bus! Don't even consider making a repair!
Bone stock battery in a bone stock 84 S-10 Blazer, which at the time was about 1 year old. I can't remember if this was before or after one of the Firestone LT tires blew up at 55mph on the 2-lane state highway. I have to give my mother credit, she did an incredible job getting the POS stopped safely. My parents gave me the junker for my first car in HS, and it spend another two years trying to kill me before I finally got rid of it.
