Default 454 build

I have a gen. V 454 that originally came out of a boat, I'm putting it into either my 80 el camino or 80 vette. havent decided which I'm going to keep as my drag car. probably the el camino but the vette is growing on me.

I'm looking to have approx. 500hp N.A. and once broke in placing a supercharger on top to well... go faster and it'll look pretty cool. I was wondering if you folks could help me figure out what to expect from the motor build and offer up options for cams, etc. (Dont worry about the car, stick with the motor).

Here's what I have.
Iron oval port heads (gen. V / VI)
4-bolt main block (gen. V)
stock crank, rods, pistons.
std. bore

I do NOT want to bore the motor, until next refresh/rebuild if needed.

I'd like to have power in the mid-range.
redline up around 7k +/-.
Would love to have a ton for torque up high. 550-600ft.lbs. minimum
etc.etc.etc.etc.etc.etc.

I'm going to be putting the motor together myself, having everything checked out and my machine shop ordering the correct pieces for the bottom end then I'm putting it together. reason for it, is I have built and done all the work to the el camino myself, I'm not willing to let one piece go without me having put it together. that or im cheap

Btw, this is a strict budget build.

Thanks in advance

Reminder: Please stay on the motor topic not the car.

Tell us more about what you;re starting with. Was it like a 454HO motor with forged crank and pistons? What compression is it? I'm assuming it's got forges stuff in it since it's a 4 bolt motor..but that's no guarantee...there were lots of 4 bolts made with cast pistons. Since you have oval ports..that's putting me back to thinking you have cast pistons.

Those pistons are going to quickly determine the rest of the components needed. You'll need some compression to make good power without the blower..so we need to know what we have.

If it's got some decent bottom end parts..then this shouldn't be too hard.

Talk to us.

Default This is what I know about the 454

It came out of a boat, and was going to be rebuilt however the guy needed a motor and purchased a crate engine. the motor then sat in the guys garage for a couple years and that's when he gave it to me. It's a mercruiser motor, serial number tag had F356117 (from memory). I called my local marine parts place and they said "it's a mercruiser 7.4 454." they didnt give me anything other than that. it has about 50 hours run time. the motor ran fine when he parked the boat, went out a week later and the motor wouldnt turn over. (the pistons were smooth in not rough like some cast? pistons) Machine shop said they could be forged having been a marine application. He could find out but that wouldn't be until we went to replace the piston with OE.
Block # 10114182 Mortec = 454, 91-up, 4-bolt, Gen.V
Head # 10114156 Mortec = 91-up, oval,OPEN,Gen.V & VI 454 118cc chamber

Hope this info. helps; what's here is what I know about the motor. I can always try to find something else out if need be.
