Default '82 CFI No Start/Hard Start Problem

Hi guys, I've got a no start problem on a friend's early 1982 CFI with 25K miles on it. Since I've never worked on one, I thought maybe you could point me in the right direction. It's cranking but not starting. I don't think it's ever had a problem before.

Background: Exhaust is blowing soot on startup. I previously adjusted the timing to -6 (from -3). Yesterday I pulled codes and got a code 44 - lean exhaust. Cleared codes then started the car and scanned with WinALDL while warming it up 5 mins or so. TPS seemed out of line if my nubers are right, but no code. Backed the car out, it stalled and hasn't started since. Almost got it running once today, but when I gave it some gas it bogged and wouldn't hold, like it was starving for fuel.

Pulled a couple plugs - a little carboned, gapped @ .035, but otherwise OK. Checked #1 for spark - ok. The injector nozzle is wet, but I can't see if it's spraying or dripping (doing this solo at the moment). I do hear the fuel pump prime for 2 seconds with ignition on and there's 40 PSI of oil pressure on crank.
I don't have a fuel pressure gauge at the moment (that may have to change) to check pressure.

Any tips or suggestions on something I may have missed? Is it safe to use starting fluid on a TB? Also, if I pick up a FP gauge, how & where are you rigging it in line? I noticed there's no schraeder valve. Thanks in advance!

This site is dedicated to the crossfire engine. You should head over there and ask your questions. Follow link.

Check the fuses for starters. Don't forget the one by the battery.

Sierra, yes I found the problem. It was out of gas! The gauge was reading 1/2 a tank, but it was actually empty. I've never seen a gauge that far off before.

ok glad to hear you got it running. just a little info, i checked my fp by follering the fuel line down the engine bay on the rigth side ( driver side ) and were the line changes from rubber to mettal i put a T type connecter there. it worked fine to check but then i disconnected it, found the pump was only putting out 4 pounds so i changed the pump and used the 85 model yr, works great
