I just bought a 75 with a 4 speed. the car has 28,840 original miles. The trany runs too hot, after only 5 mins. It pops out of gear alot, only second tho. Also has problems going into gear, especialy second, sometimes you have to really jam it in. Anyone have any idea whats wrong, and what i should do? thanks
welcome!
i'll ask since i know it's coming: how do you know the tranny is running too hot after only 5 minutes?
i would eliminate the obvious first - confirm the clutch and shifter linkage is adjusted properly.
make sure the oil level is good.
if you want to work on it yourself, go ahead and get the factory service manual and assembly manual for 1975 info . . . and post your results!
it is burning hot, the entire console around it becomes hot, even the shifter becomes hot to the touch after only a few minetes. it shouldnt ever get that hot, and not after only a few minetes. the clutch is worn to its end, a new clutch is on the way. that might help shifting, but it still shouldnt ever get that hot.
i actualy do have the assembly manual, i will go and do that. thanks!

I have replaced worn clutch assembly's on cars that had problems exactly as you are describing and with the new clutch, pp, bearing, ect: the shifting problems disappeared.
A weak pressure plate will not allow the disc disengage fully causing shifting problems, both up and down
Good luck.

Could it be the heat from the exhaust you're feeling?
Also, I gotta ask this. How do you know there's only 28,840 miles on it?
I agree....check that fluid...that way to hot. 4 speeds arnt that hard to rebuild, just a PIA. (the old ones anyway) That main gear cluster/bearing is oiled/cooled by gears picking up the oil from the bottom of the case and splashing it on and around everything else inside the case. Also inspect the shift forks to make sure they arnt bent. Hope its the clutch and not tranny input bearing.

If a new clutch is on the way then have the transmission checked out while it's out of the car. I've never heard of a hot 4 speed unless maybe its out of transmission grease. My shifter does get hot after driving a while. Like a used car salesman would say "no big deal".
