I often wondered why early 70's vettes didn't have a cruise control option since some of the Chevelles and Impala's , etc. did. Anyone ever look at installing one? I have a 72 4spd and it would be nice on some trips. I know Sears and JC WHitney used to have kits available. Do they work?
My car is odd, its a 77 with all the componants for factory cruise control, except the button on the steering column has been cut(???) and the wire is just sticking out of the rod...its weird...
anyway, my car also has a sears unit installed on it. The actual cruise control oporation(in the car), is a bit hard to find a mounting place for, in fact Im still looking for a place to put mine, someone before me just zip-tied to the column, it looks bad....the car sat for 7 years, and the other day I tried the cruise control for the first time in probably 7-8 years, and it worked!. I am still scared to try it..I just can't imagine driving the vette with cruise control anywhere around here...people are to crazy...(cruise is awesome in the truck, but not the vette)
Daniel
PS. I'll see what kind of information I can get on my sears cruise control unit...a big problem is how it mounts in the engine bay, mine is mounted in suck a place that it has to be removed if I want to do a simple tune up(to get at the wires). But other then that its ok.
The original 1977 cruise control engage button was on the end of the tilt lever for that one year only. After that, it was located on the end of the turn signal lever. I don't know if you can locate one of the tilt levers, they have to be awfully rare. Rick's Unlimited had the lever listed as STE179 but unavailable. Since the 1977 Vette had the wash/wipe and dimmer all tied into the turn signal lever, it might be possible to locate a 1980 - 1984? lever from a General Motors X-car (the old Chevrolet Citation, Olds Omega, Buick Skylark). They could have had a turn signal lever with cruise that might plug-in to the 1977 column.
On the early Vettes (1969 thru 1976), any GM turn signal lever with cruise from Cadillacs, Oldsmobiles, or Buicks that had T&T steering columns should screw right into the Corvette T&T column. The only problem is that some of those GM levers were all chromed up to go with the luxury car interiors of that time.
