I have a 1980 style exhaust on my 82, I’m using the driver’s 2” ram horn manifolds on both sides since I’m not using any smog or heat riser valves.
The drivers side bolts up pretty tight to the flange with the 2” doughnut gasket, but I noticed the flange on the passenger side is a little larger and allows the doughnut gasket to sink in a little more.
My question is: I’m assuming the ram horn manifold that is normally used with a heat riser valve is flat on the bottom.
But on the bottom of the valve that has the rounded section to mate with the exhaust flange……is it a little larger than a 2” gasket?
I’m wondering if I need to chop off the passenger side exhaust flange and weld up a flange just like the drivers side to make sure it seals correctly.
From: GA "When I grow up, I'm gonna get a Trans Am and run from the cops". Direct quote from my 4yo son.
I can't see any reason you would have to weld up anything new. But I'm not claiming to know everything about it either. I would think if the exhaust flange is long enough it should seat ok with the ramhorn. I have the ramhorns on mine with the heat riser valve though. I've looked at it and it looks like everything would be fine with with the donut gasket and extended flange. Just my .02 though.
Got the '80 AIM? I'm thinking there's a spacer on the passenger side, but don't quote me on it. It's been a long time since I crawled around under there.

I got an 82 AIM, using a 80 exhaust system on my car
Yeah the heat riser is the spacer your talking about I think. I wonder how thick it is?
I had my exhaust bolted up for the last six months and it seemed ok, but since I have it out right now I wanted to do a few things to make it easier and maybe last longer.
My manifolds and exhaust are designed for the 2" doughnut gasket.
Right now the flange on the passenger side looks like it would take a 2-1/2" doughnut gasket...it's that much bigger than the drivers side....I'm assuming that's because of the heat riser valve.
I was thinking about just getting another 2" drivers side flange and weld it up on the passenger side to make things more "equal"
I'll take pics tonight to show what I'm talking about.
I ended up ordering a riser spacer, two sleeves yesterday. Hopefully it'll go back together a littler better and not cause any problems with my gaskets not seating right.
This really important because I have an oxygen sensor on the driver side right below the doughnut flange and air coming in pass the gasket messes with my computer and causes it to dump more fuel in the engine.
