I am getting ready to install a high pressure port in my AC system. For some reason GM left this port off in 73. Later in the model year GM issued a TSB showing the installation of the HP port by cutting the rubber hose at the radiator overflow tank and using "freon" clamps to secure the port fitting. For the last two years my AC marginally works, 50 degrees at the air registers is the best I get. Without the high pressure port it is hard to know what amount of freon is in the system. I added a can of Freeze 12 last year but did not see any improvement. I believe the low pressure port read 30 psi.
Before I cut the hose and install the HP port fitting what other things should I check or consider upgrading? I still have the A6 compressor and am thinking about changing over to the radial unit used in the late 70's. Give me your thoughts/comments on what I should consider checking or upgrading.
Consider replacing the entire system with an aftermarket kit. The two I've seen get rid of the evaporator box in the engine compartment and include a modern compressor. Overhauling a stock system is hit and miss with rebuilt parts.
IMO, it's not a good idea to replace a stock unit with an after-market. If and when you sell the car, its value would be less than that of an original.
I have put the Hot Rod Air system in two C-3 drivers. Great systems and they always work. I agree with the last post though if you have a show car and want to keep it original.
