I've got a '72 454. It is new to me and the previous owner had the engine rebuilt but I'm not sure of the quality of the work. Anyway:
When it's cold it runs and sounds fine, but when it warms up it sounds as though every rocker arm is loose, rattles up a storm. I've adjust the lash and I had a professional mechanic adjust the lash - no difference, still rattles when warm.
From: WANTED: '68 rear valance with b/u light assemblies IM, e-mail, or PM me here. Thanks!
Re: Help - I'm stumped (sray454)
There’s a lot to speculate considering the given information… are you sure it isn’t exhaust leaks you are hearing? Did you check for valve train binding @ cam lobe apogee? I can think of a dozen things that can cause clattering, pinging, and ticking when an engine is warm.
I'm sure it is not an exhaust leak. It has a Comp Cams 268 cam and stock springs ... according to Comp Cam documentation, that should be OK. How can ya tell I've got binding??
Oil pressure about 80 whe cold about 35 when idling warm...
I don;t think it is a lean thing, happens at all RPM's and really sounds like valve train ...
