When I turn my 69' vette into a sharp left turn at a very low speed ( like pulling into the garage), I feel a "give" or quick slip some where in the rear axle area on the outside right wheel. I might mention that a extreme jerk also takes place when I put the Automatic Transmission into reverse. The two problems may not be connected. Any ideas for what to look at would be of great help.
I would look at the u-joints. They could be worn or ceased. I would start with the driveshaft as you are having the problem with reverse as well. I would say ceased. Good luck.
I would recommend *REMOVING* the half shafts in order to inspect the U-joints. I had 2 bad outer U-joints, but they didn't feel like it when I looked/felt at them on the car. When took them off it was obvious one was seized and the other was worn beyond belief.
Try changing your diff fluid and make sure you add 2 bottles of limited-slip additive. Take your car to a parking lot and do 10 circles in both directions to work it into the clutch packs. If a cop comes over try not to look dizzy or he'll think you're drunk (don't ask).
As far as the thump when shifting into reverse, that could be the front bushing on the diff as was pointed out above. I suggest buying a polyurethane bushing and installing it. Tighten that sucker up good.
