I ordered my 396 shortblock yesterday and I'm getting really excited about putting a different motor in the Vette. Hopefully I'll have it done by the end November. This is what I plan on doing. It shouldn't change much if at all. Give me your opinions on the combo..
396, (3.875 stroke/4.030 bore) forged crank, forged rods (6.0/stroker rods), forged flat top SRP pistons, internal balanced, Total Seal "Maxseal" gapless rings. (top ring gapless)
I'm going to reuse my slightly worked WP SportsmanII 200cc heads which should give me about 9.9:1 compression. The cam I selected is an ISKY 282/294HR, 234/246 @.050, 110LC/110IC. I may install it 4 advanced on a 106IC. And here's where I get flamed...Initiall I plan to retain my Performer RPM and modified Q-Jet. I also plan on changing to a 9.5"/2800-3000 stall conveter. I can't wait to do some serious wrenching again.
That sounds like a great combo to me! Hopefully your heads flow enough to feed it.....As for the RPM/Q-junk combo, I probably wouldn't do that...LOL Unless you know the q-junk backwards and forwards and know how to tune them. You trying to keep your stock hood and air cleaner or something? If so then I can see you trying to use them...if not, get an air gap and a Demon.
You say its running 7.90s right now, so thats what, 12.30s or so in the 1/4? I would think you should get some high 11s outta the new motor with the right intake setup.
converter and gearing is the key. Where did you get the shortblock from?
I am not sure about the cam/stall combo you listed. You're 396 will chew up that 234 degree cam and make it idle like a stock 350. Which isn't a bad thing if that what you want. BUT,if that's what you want why use a 3000 stall?
For what it's worth my 3000 10" converter (so they claim) pulls to 3500 or so behind my 406(Translation.....more torque, higher stall) and I run a 254 degree flat tappet solid with a Vic Jr.If I were to do it again,I'd drop to a 2500 stall, and loose maybe 10 degrees duration. Got my eye on a Crane solid with 244/252@.050 with a 106 LC that should really crank it up in the 406.
I also ran a Q-Jet for a month with the 406,and fuel starvation forced me to a Holley 3310.There's only so much fuel you can shove through one bowl on a Q-Jet.

Thanks. I have some concern about the heads but I think they'll be alright. I have a brand new in the box Mighty Demon 825MS that I can use. When I do, I think I'm going to try the Weiand AIRSTRIKE. I just want to see how the Q-jet works with this combo. I'm no Lars but I know my way around a Q-jet. I have a 3" cowl hood so its not clearance related. Mid to hi 7.90's is about mid 12's in the quarter. It has 3.73's and I plan on getting a new converter, so we'll see. I ordered the shortblock from CNC Motorsports. Not cheap but not super expensive either.
Sounds really good, I do like the q-jet and it should work fine. Lars tuning paper has helped me get to know these carbs really well and I am still running them on my cars.

I chose the cam because I'm using iron heads at 9.9CR. My thinking is it'll bleed of some cylinder pressure and aid in detonation avoidance. I think the cam will sound nice in the 396. The "little" 221/232@.050 in there now has a distinctive lope/rumble. I figured its only 13 more cubes. As far as the converter, well converters have always been like voodoo to me. I have a 3000 stall 9.5" in my truck which has a 11.1CR 383 w/a 242/248HR @.050. So I figured somewhere in the same area would be good. Reality is I don't know. What stall would you suggest for this combo? Truth is I have a thing for Q-Jets because I have done so well at the track all these years with my Q-Jet and relatively small cams. Maybe this motor will outgrow it but I'm willing to give it a try since it's been so good to me.

Like I said, I have a "thing" for Q-Jets. Mine has always been good to me mileage and performance wise. It is the original carb that came on my car but it's been "done" by the carb shop. This motor may turn out to need more than it can give but I'll give it a chance to prove itself.
