Hello.Have recently purchased a '76 vette..Do not know if engine is original..(I don't think it is)...It is painted orange with chrome valve covers...stamped on each valvecover is 350HP..It has chrome breather cover as well with no stamp.a friend of mine that has a '73 vette said engine is older than a 76 cause of dampening can (littlecylinder) near ignition..which is not hooked up..he said reason for this can is to help reduce noise off breaker type ignition..(it is HEI/ACCEL now)..He said vettes went to HEI in 75?...I do not know..Is there any engine ID/serial numbers I can look for..I have checked into VIN already and it says a 350...but I know they did not produce over 200HP in '76..Only engine I saw once that could do that is the 327/350 or 350/350 from late 60's to early 70????Please help,Thanks,Pete

Also, the Vin should say Z37 L or Z37 X ..... last six digits are the production number sequence. Z37 means corvette coupe. If it's says L, it's the standard L48 180 HP version. The X means it's a L-82 210 HP version. The production number should be stamped on the passenger side head up front on the pad. Number should be on the tranny and rear end also. You can search the forum for Lar's paper on Carb tuning. He included an id section for the quadrajet. You can also search the forum for your car's birth date. In the end, it doesn't really matter to most people. Enjoy the car!
