Default Intermittent wiper question?

OK, I know what I'm about to say is blasphemy to some but I had the '82 out in the rain the other day (first time) and I had problems with the wipers. If I put it on steady they worked fine. WHen I put it on delay sometimes the wipers would stop right in front of my eyes, sometimes at the A posts, sometimes both spots in one cycle. Is this a switch thing or a motor thing?

Probably in the controller in the jack compartment.

Rog,
is it replaceable? I should just put you on retainer. See I have to find something to tinker with.

They are replaceable if you can find one. Last one I saw they wanted $400 bucks. Call lectriclimited they sell a bypass jumper for $15 you won't have the intermittent function but you will have slow and fast speeds.
Hope this helps, Kona

I too had my car out in the rain and believe it or not it didn't melt. HAHA

with Kona the bypass is a good option. It is repairable if you can find someone that will do it.Its only diodes resistors and "stuff"and as you can tell by my termonoligy I dont know how to do it.Wish I knew how to do individual checks on each component because its probably just one of them. When I get one thats doing what yours is doing I clean the circuit board with liquid electrical flux and then I resolder every terminal. This fixes about 1 in 5.That would a little tinkering but some real tinkering would be a new ZZ383-425HP crate motor. You readyYet ?

MY brother in law is a real electrical wizard with diodes, capacitors and such. Sounds like just the project for him. In the jack compartment you say.

yes $29 is a good deal. I a have a couple that I got for $25 but they both needed repair. It costs me about $15 for parts to fix one.

sounds like the main power transistor for the delay circuit is failing. You can send me the part and I will rebuild it (replace main transistor and all electrolitic caps)or you could find someone closer to you to work on it. The main transistor replacement is an MJH-6284 which is a darlinton 20 amp NPN TO-218 case. It is possible that the transistor just needs to be resoldered or that you have a bare wire that controls the stopping of the wipers when on delay. This is the same wire that is used to run the washer pump and the pump is grounding. So take the wiper controller and test it in another car, 1980 to 1982 all used the same controller.

I had a problem with my wipers on my 80. To give a little history. I had the same problem on my 94 chevy pickup- someone told me to open the hood and tap the wiper motor with a hammer. If it tries to move then the motor or circuit board is going bad (water intrusion). I did the same thing on my 80 vette and the wipers would move a few inches- so I know it was getting the signal. Replaced the motor and everything works fine. The motor I think was under $100 bucks from AutoZone.

ESU said that the wipers work fine on low and high so I would say that there is nothing wrong with the motor. The contact in the motor cover could be loose though.

Thats correct, they work fine on high and low but when put in the intermittent mode they work even more intermittently stopping at various locations across the windshield. The second one I bought off ebay didnt even work at all in delay mode. Just curious when u mention that the washer circuit is linked to this. For some reason Bubba removed the washer tank and the pump and never replaced it. He also cut the wires for the pump plug so I dont even see them anymore. Just thought I'd mention it. Dale why dont you PM me how much it will cost to repair plus your shipping info and whether you want me to send the one that doesnt work at all in delay or my original one that works sometimes.

Well I just tested a controller today that matches your problem. The wipers stop at the right place but they also stop at least once during a sweep where they should not. A new problem to figure out.
