Default Idle and drive gear problems.

I've developed a problem with the engine idle. When I start it, it seems erratic and shakes but not too bad. The rpms are over 1000 in park where they used to be around 1000.

-

I guess I should add that this all started with a backfire through the carb. Before this start, where it backfired, it idled and ran fine.

-

I can adjust the idle mixture screws but it will either get faster or slow and start shaking badly.

-

The choke was already hot so I can't test it, it's electric.

-

When I put it in a drive gear like drive or reverse the rpms drop to about 500 and it shakes really bad like it's going to die and I hear a sucking noise like the carb is sucking in air through a straw.

-

I checked to make sure all the spark plug boots were in place and secure and that the cap was latched down properly.

-

I have tried rotating the distributor a little each way or back to the middle where it seems to run the best.

-

I'm confused so who has some ideas?

Well, it's okay I guess that no one had any ideas because I got to looking around and found a rubber cap that came off or the main vacuum tree on the manifold. The previous owner set up a system where one of the ports went to the transmission and one was capped off.

-

I guess when it backfired it popped that cap off and it was sucking air in.

-

I didn't know a vacuum leak could cause it to run so crappy.
