Don't be fooled, those hex-holes in the console are purely decorative! Sadly, you have to take the whole console out and remove the clock from behind. I made the exact same mistake when I first bought my vette

Remove the four screws holding the face plate to the dash. Next remove the radio ***** and nuts holding the radio to the face plate. Next remove the side console cover. There are two 7mm head bolts holding the radio/gauge face plate to the lower console face plate.
After everything is unbolted pull the face plate out. Two place where it will get stuck is the top center bulb will get caught on the top dash pad. And the other is the rear defroster ****.
Lay a rag on the cosole to keep from marking the console. When you get it pulled out unplug the center wiring harness. Make sure you mark which way the plug goes because if you plug it in backwards and start the car it will not shut off unless you unplug it.
With the bezel out there will be some 7mm bolts holding it together. First remove the tiny screw on the clock stem, unbolt the housing from the bezel, remove the clock from the housing. There will be a couple of nuts holding it to the printed circut.
This is also a good time to clean the bezel lens and replace all of the dash light bulbs.
