Wondered if someone could explain gear ratios to me and how they affect performance. While my vette has roughly 360hp, she is not being "all she could be" and she is particularly a dullard off the line and at low speeds.
What would my 77 have in it now (its stock0..
What would be my best options
What would be the cost?
Well, more than likely you car has either 3.08's or 3.55 but there were other options. Those are just the most likely ones. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but if you had say 3.70 gears you'd get 3.7 turns of the drives axels for every 1 turn of the driveshaft. Anf if you had 3.08's you'd get 3.08 turns at the axles for every turn of the driveshaft and so on. So really you're getting more bang for the buck when you buy lower (higher number) gears. The lower gears may get you car out of the hole faster but at the expense of higher revs on the highway which means poorer gas milage. The oppisite goes for taller gears. You may not be as fast with the higher gears (lower number) but you'll be able to drive at lower revs with increased milage. There is a vast selection of gears for your car: 2.73, 3.08, 3.36, 3.55, 3.70, 3.90, 4.11, 4.56....just decide what you want to do with your car and go from there. Also, the transmission you have, wether it be a th350/400 , will play a roll in you're gear selection. The big thing now is to install an overdrive transmission so you can have you're 3.70's or 4.11's for accelleration and still be able to cruise the highways at low revs. I like to call it "having your cake and eating it too"
Actually, nunus is right. I had it reversed. It's 3.70 turns of the drive shaft for one turn of the drive axles. Sorry, hope I haven't confused you. Nunus, thanks for catchin that.
