What would be a good replacement carburetor for my '73. It is a 350 ci with 190 HP and automatic transmission. I think Edelbrock is supposed to be a good direct replacement, but what model and how many CFM?
Thanks,
Bill

What happened to the Q-jet ??? Cause per everone on here they really like the Qjet... Im getting ready to have mine reduilt here as soon as the rain starts.
You should consider sticking with the Q-Jet...even if it needs rebuilding.
If you want the Edelbrock, it is an excellent carb, but it isn't a direct replacement in that it's not simply a remove and replace. You'll likely need an adapter to the stock intake, as the Edelbrock is a square-bore and the orignal intake has a spread-bore pattern.
You'll have to modify the fuel line, install an in-line fuel filter, modify the linkages, and if you have a/c, buy the Edelbrock kick-up idle solenoid. None of this stuff is difficult but adds to more than simply buying the carburetor.
If you want to replace the intake at the same time, consider the Edelbrock Performer or Performer EPS. The EPS is designed specifically for their square bore carbs.
As far as which Edelbrock carburetor...you would be very happy with a 1406 600 cfm with electric choke.

I do have the Q-Jet and a friend of mine is going to rebuild it for me, but I was under the impression that the Edelbrock was a better carb.
Edelbrock used to manufacture Q-Jets when GM stopped doing so. They no longer make Q-Jets, but they do make Carter AFB's, etc. The AFB carb is OK, but not as practical and "clever" as the Q-Jet design. If you have a Q-Jet (or Edelbrock Q-Jet), do yourself a favor and send it and your distributor to Lars so that he can do his "magic". His fees for both will likely be less than buying a poor quality new carb or than buying a newly rebuilt unit from a professional rebuilder. But I will guarantee that your car will run better than it has in years....and maybe better than it did when new! Do a search for Lars info or send him a PM when you see a post from him.
IMO, points eliminator kits are for folks with ignition problems who don't know how to resolve them. A properly tuned points distributor with good quality parts will perform the job just as well. [But you do need to find a dwell meter!] Electronic systems are pretty reliable...until they break; then the engine won't fire at all and your outa' luck. If you keep a few basic tools and repair parts (points, condenser, rotor and cap) in the car, you can fix a points-type problem in minutes.

Get the distributor and carb rebuilt by Lars, get the timing dialed in, and I guarantee you that you will see the results right away. Good luck
What did he do to the distrubutor? I have been thinking about installing a points eliminator kit. Should I do that or leave it as is?
Lars has a paper on this but in a nutshell, if your dist has never been out of the car, chances are that it will need rebuilt.
There is way more to a dist than I ever could've imagined prior to watching Lars work on mine.
Okay, I will get my carburetor back from my friend and get it over to Lars along with my Distributor and I will have him rebuild both of them. I will ask him about the points eliminator and I will take his advice, but I think I already know what he will say. I just want to finish out the summer first. I have owned this car for twelve years and didn’t use it for the last two. This year I started it up early in the season and have been enjoying it so much that I don’t want to disable it until the summer is over.
Thanks,
