Default 76 EGR question

Hello everyone, I have a 76 and I just replaced the ported vac switch on the egr system. EGR was not working at all before as the vac switch wasn't opening. So after replacing the switch I notice that once the engine is warmed up the egr is opening when the engine is at idle and idles like crap. Question is I belive this valve is supposed to be closed at idle and only open at cruising speeds. Unless this is normal what could be causing it to open at idle? Idle is set about 600 rpm and the vac line appears to be in the correct position on the carb any thoughts?
Thanks
Adam

If you have it connected to a ported connection to the carb, there should be NO vacuum on this line at idle. Pull off the hose connection at the carb while the car is idleing and test with your finger to see if there is any suction/vacuum at idle at this connection. If there is vacuun/suction, then your are NOT connected to a ported fitting and you need to use a different carb connection that is ported. If there is no vacuum (as there should not be if it is a ported fitting at the carb) then the EGR is defective and must be replaced.

It appears to be connected to a non ported fitting on the carb. There appear to be only two ported fittings on the carb one is already going to the vac advance and the other larger fitting is going to the canister something is in the wrong place but I can't figure out what and the vac hose diagram in the book is kinda vague.

If you have a quadrajet, the ported vac for EGR is on the front toward the passenger side near the base; the manifold vac for the distributor advance is on the driver side. The BG Demon had the 2 ports together on the passenger side of the carb, though I forget which was on top.
