The headlights on my '82 will no longer come up when I turn the headlight switch on. When I pull the manual overide down they both pop up fine. From what I can tell the vacuum is routed from the headlight switch through the override. Am I correct in assuming the headlight switch is bad?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Or a hose could have come off at the switch. I don't think you need to replace it yet. The part that reroutes the vaccum in the switch is mechanical. Take it out and see if you can fix it. First check for a hose coming loose.
That's the Vac switch on top of the switch. Unfortunatly, to get to it, you have to drop the steering column. I had the same problem as you, adn the dimmer didn't work, so i changed the switch with one I repaired. The vac hose had come off the switch, but there's no way to get to it except by dropping the steering column. I cut the loose end off and reattacted it. If you do drop the column, be sure to take the rag joint loose first, to prevent dammage to your steering column.
If you can lie on the floor of the car you don't need to drop the steering wheel.
Remove the trim ring on the switch.Drop the pad the bypass switch is on. Reach up and depress the round button you see in the picture above...the one to left of the number 2. Pull the **** and shaft out. Drop the switch and disconnect the wire connectors and hoses.
