Default Need help buying a cam

Ive decided on a Comp Cams grind cam for my new big block. But because it is a Gen VI block I need a custom grind (stepped nose).

Ive tried emailing Comp on 'compcams@compcams.com' but I get no response. As I am in Australia, Im not interested in phoning at midnight and I cant order it over the web.

Does anyone have an email for Comp that gets checked? I also need some springs, locators and collets too.

Did you check "Summitracing.com"? They have an excellent selection of engine parts including hundreds of camshafts. Maybe you can find the grind you are looking for? Customer service is also great…

Good Luck!

You might try faxing compcams, fax # 901-366-1807

Crane catalog has a lot of step nose Gen-6
hydraulic roller cams, lifters, springs to match.
1996-2000 GEN-6, they have them from mild to
262/270 .050 duration.
www.Cranecams.com, phone #386-258-6174, fax #386-258-6167

Are you going to ask them for Cam Advice? All you get on their "TECH" line is some moron that can kind of read. So he plugs in your motor parameters and poof he has a canned answer. What do you expect from an $8 per hour worker that has never owned or probably never seen an American V-8 big block.

You should post your specs here and you would at least get an answer from somebody that owns solid roller

Consider Lunati cams. Their VooDoo line is primo.

I also agree about trying Summit Racing. Ask them...they'll give you good advice and they'll recommend which make cam, not just the individual grind spec.

We may not all agree on what stick to advise, but most of the opionions you'll get here do come from real world experience. If it's advice you seek, post your specs, such as bore, stroke, CR, rods, heads, intake..., and let us know what you want out of it

You might also consider Doug Herbert for roller cams ... top quality ... ALL herbert's rollers are billet ... for same or less $ than the others' cast rollers. Herbert also does step nose. Herbert's in NC USA 877-497-2787 www.dougherbert.com

Still no response from comp. I even sent a fax.

Anyway here are my specs

70 coupe
Street driven weekend toy. I still want a decent idle, dont want to push it much past 6000RPM
3.7 rear TKO 600
4.470x4.25 (533)
320cc Pro Topline heads
10.2 comp
C454 dominator dual plane manifold
1050 annular 3 circuit progessive seconadries
2" doug Thorley headers, 3" exhaust
Wanting street solid roller and would run Crower lifters

I was thinking 11-771-8 or 11772-8

I need to get it on a stepped nose core, as a billet and with pressed on cast gear.

I picked up the Lunati Voodoo hydraulic roller #60213. Nice billet roller. Lunati is great to deal with. Got a tech on the phone right away and it was someone that actually knew what they were talking about. Comp cams supposed tech gave me a miserable attitude like I was bothering them. Told me the cam I needed was a lot smaller than I had anticipated. Thier suggestion wouldn't have came close to the HP I was looking for.

Yes looked at that but their street roller cams have very conservative lift figures.

You have a couple of things going on. 533 ci which can take on a much bigger duration and still be mild. Big flow 320 cc heads don't require a big cam to make monster power, but your compression is on the lower side.

I only have 434 ci and run 248/250 .685/.714 lift with 110 LSA It's a nice running machine that doesn't have the big thumpy sound at all.

So this Crane cam might fit 254/262 .714/.714 cast iron sleeved gear.

Looking at my Crower catalog it clearly says they make custom
8620 steel billet roller camshafts w/ cast iron gear. I see no reason
why it could not have a step nose. They will even make a
8620 steel billet hardface solid/flat tappit camshaft.
www.crower.com, ph # 619-661-6477 fax # 619-661-6466.

Cranes catalog says they have 80,000+ profiles available. Installs
Iron cam gears on to steel camshafts.
www.cranecams.com, ph# 386-258-6174, fax# 386-258-6167
They will even make you an industrial (diesel) cam.
