My brake lights are not working on my 68 Vette. I thought it was the brake light switch so I bought a switch for the 69 on up models because the 68 is imposible to find. I wired it up and the brake lights still don't work. What should I try next? Is there a fuse that may be blown? If it is not a fuse where should I go from there? The tail lights work fine but the turn signal switch is bad and I have a new one that I am going to put in in the next couple of days. could the turn signal switch have any thing to do with the brake lights?
Thanks, Jon
Yes, the turn signal switch is probably the source of the problem. All of the brake and tail-light stuff runs through the turn signal switch if I am not mistaken.
if the CRTSY fuse is intact, meaning that interior lighting or radio and such works than it is not a fuse problem. Get Jim Shea's info on the steering column and the blinker switch replacement and repair, they will help immensely. Do the back up lights work? or the side marker lamps?
All the lights work interior, marker, all four headlights and the factory radio works. The only thing not working is the brake lights and the turn signals. I am trying to put the new turn signal switch in now but I can't get the connector through the little hole in the back part of the steering wheel. I really don't want to cut the wires and have to splice them back together.
I hooked the turn signal switch harness and tryed to make the turn signal work and it didn't. I think I am in over my head.
Maybe too late but...
To help thread turnsignal harness through the column, tie either a piece of .020 wire or nylon lacing chord to the plug on the old harness.Make the wire/cord about 3 ft long
Tie the cord/wire thru the empty hole in the end of the Harness plug closest to the firewall. Once the steering wheel is removed spray some silicone lubricant down the hole where the T/S harness comes up.
Now with the loose end of the cord tied to the brake pedal, gently pull the T/S switch out towards you. You made need to "saw" the harness back and forth to work it thru the column.
Once the old harness is out untie the cord from the old harness and attach it to the new harness in the same fashion. Then use the cord to gently pull the harness back down.
The key here is to use spray silicone liberally
I went ahead and cut the harness and spliced it back together. I still don't have any brake lights or turn signals. Everything else is working. What is going on? I am about to go crazy.
My radio is working and the interior lights come on when I open the door. I just noticed that the instrament lights are not lighting up. Could this be a fuse issue with them not lighting up. I can't really tell if anything is blown by looking it is too dark under there.
Thanks, Jon
