I am in the process of re-plumbling my Q-jet with stainless braided hose and AN fittings I purchased from Summit. (Nice people by the way!). Can anyone give me some hints about how to cut the stainless hose without fraying it? I am replacing a rubber hose and cheap fuel filter from the mechanical fuel pump to the carb. Also, is it necessary to keep the bronze filter in the carb if a high quality in-line filter is used?
If you do use a cut-off wheel to cut the hose, MAKE SURE you clean the inside of the hose before you assemble it. The grit from the cut-off wheel is not good for your fuel system.
I just watched a demo video not long ago about a AN fitting assembly tool of some kind, and the guy was cutting stainless braided hose with a big a$$ hammer and broad chisel on a piece of aluminum. Worked slicker than owl sh*t!
I have seen it done several ways. The guys that get paid to build them use a carbide saw, looks like a meat slicer. Some use a cutter looks like a big cable cutter. I like the cutoff wheel and blow the hose before installing.
I tried using my dremel tool with a metal cut-off wheel and it made a mess, even with tape around the hose. I got some advice from a local speed shop and he suggested electrical tape and a fine hack saw. Well, that worked very well and my first braided hose assembly was a success!
