I just bought a 79 vette, with the L-82 motor, it hasn't run in over 8 years. When the key is inserted, the interior lights come on etc., so obviously the car is getting power, but when I turn the key to actually start the car, the battery sizzles and smokes. Any ideas on what this could be?
You have a dead short in the wiring to the starter...AFTER the ignition switch. OR...the starter [or engine] is frozen and can't turn when you put "the juice" to it.
I would say, to make sure you don't have a seized engine, pull the plugs and try rotation the crank yourself with a ratchet or breaker bar on the crank bolt. Make sure you turn it clockwise.
If it rotates fairly easily, then I would suspect a short or a bad starter.
