Nope-Look straight up between your a/C vents. There is a piece of plastic sticking down between them. If you look under it there is a small hole cut in it. GUESS WHAT, a light bulb goes there and shines down on the panel.
I have yet to find this bulb, and ripping apart the cluster to replace it
is not on my top priorities. If you find the buld part # please post it.

Replaced all my light bulbs when I pulled the center console to repair the radio and clock. I concur that it's a PITA. But . . . if you're in there anyways, the light bulb is a special bulb with a "focused lense" end. I originally tried just putting a regular bulb in there, but barely got any light all the way down to the HVAC controls. The special bulb is available from any of the mailorder houses. I got mine from either Eckler's or Mid-America (or maybe it was ZIP, I can't remember).
FWIW, this bulb is still available from GM, called my local Chevy dealer, and they can get them, but only in packages of 10. I think it was $30 for the package. I just installed a "regular" bulb in place. Not a whole lot of light, but enough to see the controls at night
