Default turbo 400 kickdown switch

does anyone know how to set up the 400 tranny switch that is connected to the gas pedal linkage ? It appears to only bolt into place but on mine with the gas pedal to the floor the switch is hardly being contacted by the linkage and does not actuate enough movement on the switch slide assy to activate it. The switch slider is not seized, I can manually move it and when it is at its travel limit there is continuity between the terminals. Thanks

I put some rubber tubing around the arm on the switch to take up some of the slack. Thick insulation and carpet do not help. If you can move the switch have your key on and listen for a click. Also check the fuse panel to see if the fuse is blown going to the switch.

If you have not already done so, verify that you getting WOT when the pedeal is pushed to the floor. With the engine off, have someone push the pedal to the floor, while you check to be sure you have WOT at the carb. About a year ago, I discovered I was not getting WOT. I had to reshape (bend) the metal rod that pulls the throttle cable. This also improved the interaction with the kick-down switch.

With the key on and engine not running, you should be able to floor the gas pedal and hear the cowl induction door click open in your hood. The same switch on the gas pedal (and it's up in there but you can reach it) also controls the kickdown soleniod in the transmission.

So pop the hood and disconnect the wire that runs up the hood to the cowl induction door and repeat your test. It will be faint but you should be able to hear a very slight click from the transmission when you floor the gas pedal. The test light will confirm that you're getting juice to the solenoid, and the click will confirm that the solenoid is actually working.

I had to put tape on the rod to build up enough thickness to activate the solenoid. Good Luck.

Thanks for the replies!
I'm glad that I am not the only person to find this fault. Now it's time to do the tests and if all checks okay then I will modify the rod to actuate correctly. Thanks again

Bubba would just wrap it with duct tape until it would engage!
