Question: How much (if any) play should there be at the driveshaft yoke of the differential? I can twist the driveshaft back and forth about 1/8 -1/4 of an inch and can hear a slight knocking sound. Yes, I replaced the u-joints. Is this normal, or does my pinion bearing sound bad? Thanks! JG700
All rear end gears have some backlash. Sounds normal. I would change rear end fluid if it hasn't been done recently. Penzoil GL 80-90 plus 1- 4 oz bottle of GM posi additive.
Hi Gary, That is at the gear interface. What would that convert to @ the driveshaft yoke? 1/8' of rotational play seems well within limits to me on a used unit.
Let me explain: I have a "wobble" noise from the rear. It goes away upon acceleration, but is loud during coasting (even with the engine off and the car rolling.) I changed the fluid, u-joints, and it is still there. It sounds rotational, as in it diminishes as the car slows down. I'm trying to narrow it down, and the diff seems to be the source of it. No whining noises, leaks, or slipping. I even replaced the parking brakes! Any ideas?
