Default Rear wheel angle problem?

here's some pics to explain better

as you can see from the photo's, the wheel is angled outward, the other rear wheel didnt do that.

also you can see the shaft going into the diff, coming out by a inch, is that ok?, is that shaft a sign of damage to diff?

so what needs replacing there to solve the problem?

cheers

The side yoke is worn and pulling out past the snap ring, which is now in the diff. Looks like a stock suspension and you may be in for some work.
Can't see the strut rod, is it bent?

dont have pic of the strut, but it looks ok, the rear trailing arm moves with the wheel, when I move it up and down, there is hugh about of movement.

so if side yoke is worn, what do I need to replace?

The side yoke is held in place with a snap ring. I had a full pictorial here on a complete custom diff rebuild. You may still find it under my name. I will no longer post pictures here so if you can't find it you will under my name at other corvette forums. Look it over it will help you a lot.

Hi Dave, Gary is right, your sir-clip or snap ring is broken loose. Just did my diff. with garys help I might add, and this pic may help. it was taken inside the diff. You can see, I had enough end play that the spline actually rode on the center pin and got mushroomed. I had to use a dremmel to remove the material just so that I could remove it.

Hpoe this helps

1- I am not a lurker, been active here since 8/99. I have been working on vettes for 30 years but continue to learn everyday.

2- I have a LOT of pictorials on custom rebuilding that I have posted here for years. I chose to stop posting pictures here for personal reasons. I am not, nor do I intend to be a vendor. The money I saved dozens of members here should have been sufficient but I guess not.

3- I have not abandoned guys who need help and have continued to post my opinion on repairs. Some of my procedures may not be "appreciated" by some in the business but they do offer the owner some options or at the least the knowledge of how something works. To date I have not seen any in-depth procedures like the ones I wrote offered here.

4 - I have not posted any direct links to any other forum but anyone with a PC can certainly find other forums. This is still a free country I believe.

5- Lastly, no need for you to apologize to me. I don't believe I know you and you are intitled to your own opinion. Sounds like I wouldn't be able to help you anyway. You are free to find my work as is everyone else, like it or dislike it is again your choice.

I will continue to offer help to those that request it and will provide pictorial links to help them but I will not post anymore pictures here. Like it or not. There has been a lot of people here that have posted about problems and politics here lately, I am not part of any of that crap. I have no time for the petty nonsense it generates.

Good luck with your car but please don't ask me for help if you have a problem. I'm sure you can get by without me.

Dave,

At least that side yoke, and probably the other one, is knackered mate! with all this excitement you've been having I hope you got this vette cheap Sorry, only joking That's a fairly common failure on these. Most here would say that diff needs rebuilding asap, some here would say leave it and forget about it. Personally I'd go with the rebuilding option, because if something was to happen to your strut rod you'll no longer have anything holding the wheel in! Also, when the yokes are severely worn you can never get the wheels aligned properly. Trouble is it's not a five minute job, and it's only really apparent what's going to need replacing once the diff's out of the car and apart.

You're a wee bit to far up north mate.... I've tooled up to do these and the 80-82 diff rebuilds and would gladly offer my help, but it'd cost a bit to post that lump down to me!

Dave,

No worries. Sorry to say though that you're going to need a "friendly" MOT tester who can honestly grab hold of that back wheel, watch it move in and out by an inch or more and say "pass!" Depends where you normally go for the test I guess, but you might have a hard time explaining it to him as being "normal"!

I've personally never driven one with missing circlips like yours has, but I would imagine it might feel a bit squirrely on certain bends, on the other hand, you might never notice a problem.

Good luck with it!

Hey there.

Check out corvettefaq.com - Gary's (GTR1999) papers are there.

He is a wealth of information. I have done a lot of work on my restoration with his "FREE" help.

I have been a member since Nov 2006 and have watched a lot of BS go down.

But Gary has always remainded a true professional and a gentleman.

So to anyone trying to bash him - YOU OWE HIM AN APOLOGY!

To the OP - good luck with your repair!

Peace
Bman

Default Snap rings!

I have had the same problem with my 79,L 82 ,4 speed low milage car of which I am the original owner.I found when I went in for an alignment front and rear before a planned caravan trip.and seems to be a weak link for these cars,I had an excessive amount of end play/in and out.The snap rings were in great shape sitting in the bottom of my differental! But the stub shafts were history, fortunate for me my rear was okay I removed it from the car cleaned it out real good, checked condition and installed new stub shafts, seals, bearings and snap rings and I am back on the road.I am new to this forum and you have good advice from Gary,I hope I have his name correct. This is a very good forum.Later Geno
