as im putting my 454 back together i dont want to use the nasty old bolts that came off it.
i was going to use stainless hardware for the intake manifold, belt pulleys, oil pan and timing cover.for everything else i have used arp hardware.
can someone tell me any reason why i shouldnt use stainless in these areas?
just want to be sure im not making a mistake.
thanks,chris.
There could be a very good reason NOT to use stainless bolts in some areas on the engine. Just make sure that you replace ANY bolts with equivalent bolts. That means not only getting the correct length and thread size, but also making sure that the STRENGTH of the bolt is as good or better than the originals. American bolts come in "grades" for strength.... Grand 3, Grade 5, Grade 8... and for each design of bolt that translates to a strength in pounds (that it will safely hold when torqued). You need to match the strength value of the bolts you replace and also make sure that the proper torque value in placed on the new bolts (each design bolt has different torquing specs).
It's not as easy as it looks to change bolts [correctly]. P.S. The most critical areas are the head bolts because of the high loading on them; second most critical are the exhaust manifold bolts because of the heat on them. Good luck.
thanks guys.i bought stainless for the oil pan, intake and timing cover.
everything else i already had in arp hardware.i just need to order some arp bolts for the pulleys now.
