I have an 82 vette and for the first time today I couldn't get my driver's side door open. After awhile I finally figured out how to do get it open. I had to actually pull forward on the unlock **** (as if I was manually unlocking it) and then I could open it. Basically the power unlock wasn't pulling the lock machanism out far enough to disengage the lock without manually pulling it out further. Is this something that WD40 could fix or would I have to replace the whole locking mechanism?
Thanks in advance for anyone's guidance on this!

Door locks are a relatively common problem. My 1980 had some wear and "junk" issues. The A.I.M. has several sheets on door lock adjustment - (in 1980 it was UPC F01 to F12 sheet 12 thru 17)
The 1982 GM Corvette Shop Manual has some info in the "Body" section.
You might also try a search of this site, there should be several threads on various door lock issues.
I had to completely redo my locks and still need a new powerlock switch for the driver side. I have found that a little white lithium grease works great, better than WD-40. It lasts longer. Also you may want to invest in some new retaining clips for all the linkages since you are there. I think you can get them in the HELP section of the autoparts store.
I had the same issue on the passengers side. I pulled the door panels and sanded all of the electrical connections (the pins on the switch). Coated every mechanism I could get to with white lithium grease and manual worked the mechanisms back and forth several times and whola no more issues. The connections get oxidized and coroded over the years.
