Default 79 Exhaust Options

The owner of the vette I'll be wrenching on wanted to know how to make his car louder, and I mentioned headers, and a hi-flow exhaust. So my question to you guys is: What is the best all around system for both rumble factor and power?

I searched the net, and found some stuff, but wasnt sure if it would be a direct bolt on, so I thought I would ask some of the guys on here what they have done, or where to look.

TIA,

Jeff

Hooker long tube headers. Custom dual 2.5" exhaust system from a local muffler shop, and a pair of Magna Flow mufflers.

That will sound FANTASTIC.

Are you interested in increasing the engine performance to match the exhaust or did you just want better sound?

The owner is going for sound, but im more intrested in performance, the sound would be a bonus. When i told him what a system runs for he about fell over.

I was thinking of doing headers with down tubes, then swap mufflers, but that exhaust is probably permanently rusted together. So in my mind its easier to do the whole system.

Yes, easier to remove everything from the front back.

However, if the owner is on a budget then things aren't always going to be easy.

If you know someone with a welder and bender you can make the system yourself. You can buy the tube stock, and do the labor yourself. All sost would go to headers, tube, and mufflers. Could cut the cost in half.

Yeah that would work good if i had access to any of those, he said he was gonna (try to) drop off the vette this weekend, so (maybe) ill have a chance to go further into detail with what this all involves.

If he scoffed at the cost of doing long tube rear dual exhaust then he will die when he sees the cost of side mount headers these days.

There wont be any *'s on installation of the headers, as far as clearance or what have you? What about port-matching, that was the other option i gave him. I suppose for bang for buck and the easy factor headers are still the best route, no?

I havent been around sbc's in awhile so i need to do a little catch up, Ive been knee deep in my 944 for the last year or so.
