After driving the 68 for a short while and back home in the garage, turn off the key, but engine still running (will not turn off), this just happened and did not happen before. after killing the engine, have the ignition switch off and disconnected and with the battery re-connected, the car have power again even with out the ignition switch connected. Have taken the alternator power off and regulator connector off, re-connect the battery, there are still power, any idea what happen? Bad ignition switch? or ? Tested on the bench with Ohm meter, the switch seem to work fine, please advise!
no, have not try the the terminal at the starter. will try that.
I tested the switch on the bench with Ohm meter, all the terminals seem like working and I can turn on and off the connection when you turn on and off the key.
There are 2 power wires going to the coil-one from the ignition switch and one from the R term. at the starter solenoid. If the solenoid is shorted you will get power straight from the battery.Just remove both wires from the pos. term. of the coil and see which one has power.
Had the same problem a year ago. I blew a diode in the ignition switch. Since it was my mechanic that traced the problem he wired an external diode on a wire next to the alternator. To do a proper fix would have been expensive since the steering column would have to come out.
thanks for the suggestion, It was a bad starter solenoid, the R terminal shorted to the power lead inside the solenoid. replaced solenoid, things are working again.
