Default header question

I have a 68 vert. with a sb, 4 spd. and have questions about headers
here goes... when it comes to headers I have always assumed that they fit a particular application (1) true or false? and (2) I should only buy a set that came off of a c3, not a camaro, chevelle etc (3) if not what will fit my car

Correct.
I'm sure that some headers may fit one or more applications but when buying headers you should always specify your year and make.

Another point to take into account is spark plug angle.
I had a set of headers that were C3 specific, but they fouled on my Dart Pro1 straight plugs.

I have ended up with Hooker Super Competition headers (Part #: 2151HKR. Equal length 1 3/4" primaries, 3" collector) and would recommend them.

A Corvette set is best- the engine sits behind the axle line. The Camaro & Chevelle engines sit over the axle line so the headers have to go back to clear crossmember.
