Checked fuse labeled C/H on top right of fuse block, I think thats the one. It looked good, replaced it anyway. Choke lead has power with key on and also with engine running. Pulled the plug on alternator and the battery and choke lights went out. Brown wire on plug tests out as a ground when disconnected, is that correct? I pulled the cover off the choke relay. When the engine is running, the contact (solenoid) is open. When I pull the plug on the alternator, the contact closes?

Sounds like the alternator is bad. Does the choke work? Ohm out the choke on the carb to ground. Where is the relay located? I never took it out to look. Its a very strange circuit. Basically the relay gets 12 to both sides so it should not pick up, but if the alt dies, you get a ground thru the alternator and the relay picks up and turns on the light.
Alternator was tested good at autoparts. On the car, when off, alternator batt post is dead, red side of plug is hot, brown is dead. When running, all are hot, both reds and brown. Also, how do you check the e-choke?
Ok, I think I found the problem. I don't have 12 volts on the wire attached to the bat post on the alternator. I have it on the red plug wire. When I run a hot lead directly from the battery to the bat post on the back of the alt, the choke and batt dash lights go out. I get 14.7 volts when running, which is good. I must have a short some where in the lead. According to my wiring diagrams, both red wires going to the alternator come from the starter via fusable links. I traced them both to the back of the fuse panel. Anyone have a good wiring diagram of the fuse block for a 81?
