Default 1970 LT1 Heads

Hi All - I have heard people say that the LT1 had "202" as opposed to "194" heads - is this true? - if so, what is the difference? - and how can you tell the two apart (casting or stamped number? shape? other distinguishing feature)? - thanks, ed

Yes, the LT-1 in 1970 did come with 2.02" intake and 1.6" exhaust valves.
They also had push rod guide plates with screw in rocker studs.

The "194" heads (1.94" intake valves) were the same casting, the final machining of the head determined if it was a "202" or "194" head.

Base engines in 1970 had the "194" heads.

350/350 engines (L46) had the "202" heads as well, however did not have the guide plates and screw in rocker studs.

The other distinguishing feature on LT-1 heads (or any 2.02"/1.60" double hump heads) you will only see with the heads off. The chamber has extra machining around the intake valve to impriove breathing. This is only done at the factory on 2.02" intake valve heads. The 1.94" intake heads do not have any chamber work, they are "as cast" in the chamber area.

Here you go. Good luck finding any. They factory big valve heads are pretty rare these days. The first picture shows it pretty well. I got that from a book. The second picture is one of the heads on my Z/28. Harder to see there but if you look closely you will see the chamber is cut around the outside of the intake valve.
