Default [ENGINE BLOCK]: Need help guys!

I am trying to track down a good useable block for my dad '67 Resto project.

The main issue here is that it has to be from the '67 era as he has a whole bunch of hi-perf parts I guess that only fit that era block. I forget what it is called, Mark III or something along those lines? You would all know better than I. :yesnod:

In the end the engine will be either a 427 or 454. I am not an engine guru when it comes down to bore/stroke etc etc.... but aren't those the same blocks and the 454 just has more stroke to it? What about a 396, is that the same also with less bore/stroke than a 427? I have found this...

BIG BLOCK CHEVY ENGS. 1966 2-bolt 396, bored .060, domed pistons, nice rods & steel crank, closed chamber heads, no intake. Nds a rebuild. $375; 1969 2-bolt 396, std bore, closed chamber heads, 8 hvy duty truck rods. $250; Call aft 4PM. (Wakefield) xxx-xxx-xxxx s

...I could care less what is inside of it and if it needs a rebuild. It just has to be the correct era block and clean. The innards will be trashed anyways. He really wants a 4-bolt main.... but 2-bolt seems to be the only thing I can ever find. How much difference in strength did these blocks have during that time? I know some of the tuners of engines in my C4 era actually prefer some of the 2-bolt blocks for different reasons.

Thanks in a advance!!!

Also...

CHEVY BIG BLOCK PARTS. 454 block, 4 bolt mains, 30 over. 1 cyl has a sleeve. 10/10 steel crank. 7/16 rods. Take all for $500; Call Paul 5-9PM. (Weymouth) xxx-xxx-xxxx t

Think that one sleeved cylinder would be something to stay away from?? That one is a 4-bolt. :yesnod:

Scorp:
A 454 block and a 427 block are essentially the same thing (other than casting numbers). Both the 454 and the 427 have a 4.25" bore, the only difference is the stroke (454=4.00" / 427=3.76"). A 396 block will not work for what you are going for unless you want a 396. The 396 has a 4.096" bore and a 3.76" stroke.

I really can't see any reason why a 2 bolt main block won't hold up to the power. If he is not comfortable with a 2 bolt block he could always take it to a machine shop and have it tapped and align bored for 4 bolt mains. Sounds like your dad is pretty cool  .

Scorp,

Try these sites for info. Theses guys are the kings of HP. They maybe able to help with a block or certainly information. Word of advice: If you sound nice and in need of help then they will help, if you come off as a smart butt then they will attack.

Scorp, here are a few things to consider:

You're looking for a Mark IV block, not the later Gen V or VI. Mark IV's were made for a LONG time, not just in the 60's.

Not all 427 and 454 blocks are the same. They updated the design in '69. The one you mentioned above (427 or 396 cast in '67) would not have the crankshaft clearance for a 4" or larger stroke that's required for a 454 (or larger) engine. 454's didn't show up until sometime in '69.

The '65 and '66 396 blocks use a different camshaft than all the later Mark IV engines.

It sounds like you should call a few junkyards and track down a Mark IV 454 block. Lots of them around from the 70's. A 4 bolt block will be much hard to find, and much more expensive.

I wouldn't let a sleeved cylinder scare me away, if that's the only thing that's bothering you. There are lots of engines out there with sleeves - it's the right way to fix several problems.

I have a 67 2bolt main 427. But it might not be what you are looking for as it is very low mi. Has thuck heads with roller rockers. That is all I know abort it outher than I didnt use any oil or leak oil. It came with my restored 68. I would have to have $1500.00 for it .
