Just did a heater core replacement, everything went well. Temperature is reading approx. 160 but only drops down to about 140 when you move the controls on the console. The mechanical cable that opens and closes the flap is operating properly since we see that there is a lot of travel in the cable and doesn't stick. We even installed a new foam seal kit to ensure a good fit and seal. Our question is why doesn't the interior vent temperature drop to below 140 and yes we used a gauge to get proper readings.
On your 71 w/ NO ac ... did you replace hc underhood ... or did you go thru dash?

It sounds like the hot water shut off valve [which should actuate when A/C is selected] isn't doing it's job. Otherwise you wouldn't have ANY hot water in the heater core to generate that heat. I'm assuming that you had the temp setting on "cold". If that is true, you have a problem with the temp selector adjustment, also.
There was no hot water shut off on 1971Coupe's car, and it can't be actuated when the A/C is selector since it's never came with A/C. I always thought that the heater core will always have water runing throught it and there is a mechanically activated door which opens and closes to let the hot water/air into the cabin.
When the temperature control is set to the hottest point, the air temperature is 160, when set the the coolest point it goes down to around 130/140.

Yes your right thats how it works. The thing is the heater core is still hot and it keeps the box around it hot.Your trying to lower the 160 temp by adding 85* air.Maybe with enough time and a higher volumn fan you might get it down a little but I think your best bet is to install a water shutoff valve. Then you should get closer to the outside air temp but even then the sun is heating the dash.
