Just sittn' here at work thinking..... How would the older 2.5" ramshead exhaust manifolds stack up to a modern set of headers if both were coupled with a 2.5" true dual exhaust??
You would think that the headers would have the advantage of modern technology, but with a little tweaking the ramshead should be close shouldn't it??
If I remember correctly there was a member here that was working with and tweaking the ramshead manifolds....anybody remember him??
Anyway like I said it was just a thought and was looking for some opinions. thanks for looking!
I was told that putting ANY thing similar to a stock set of pipes on headers will kill the effect of the headers completely, making them worthless......this from a header manufacturer....at risk of loss of sale...
I raced my vette up pikes peak in the stock class. One of the stipulations was no headers. The restrictions are very similar to F.A.S.T ( factory appearing stock tire). The engine internally was heavily modified putting out @500hp and as much torque. The modifications could not be detected externally. The exhaust was a bit of a challenge. I bought a set of 2.5's off a mid year. had them ported and extrude honed then coated by jet hot. Dont know the flow numbers but suspect they are very close to long tube headers. I was very happy with the results. I did the intake manitold at the same time and I think I spent around 1500.00.
Wow guys.....Thats a good bit of info. At least now I'll have some choices. I like the idea of a ramshorn instead of headers. They look stock and like they are supposed to be there. If the performance is on par with a header.....whynot.....?
My 72 LT-1 ran 12.60@113MPH with a set of ported 2.5" early "rams horns". ET with Hooker Super Comps 12.28@117MPH, all other factors were the same (gears, tires, mufflers, carb/intake.) The rams horns had quite a bit less lower end torque than the Hookers. I spent about 20HRS porting those rams horns and killed three 12" shank carbide burrs getting them cleaned up (about $40 for each burr.) I offered them to a racer for $425 for the pair, he thought that was too much, I told him to go and punt for himself if he thought he could do it cheaper. The manifolds are sitting in my garage until someone make me a decent offer on them.
hi i have been porting an gasket matching rams horn exhaust for some time now. an im a true believer in the flow of thease an love the fact that you dont get the heat from headers. an yes they do flow just a little less than headers. the best thing you can do is take a dremmel an get rid of the casting scag inside .an smooth any sharp edge .another good sorce is david vizards how to build max performance chevy small blocks.i cant remember ware but some one did some flow numbers an the stock manifolds numbers after working them were just under the numbers of the headers an they were confident they could match them.with that being said i love the fact that you can run stock looking parts an still stay with the high dollar motors or at least try, im running side pipes with rams horn manifolds an stock intake well not all that stock. well its all up to what you like an want but if you need some help just give a shout i can also give you the section in vizards book if you need it. i like reworking parts an doing it myself that to me is all fun sorry so long. bert
