Default 1972 Vette tech question

I am a new user to Corvette Form. I have owned a 1972 Vette for 2 years. I am slowly restoring it. The previous owner spent alot of $$ modifing the car and now I am putting it back. I am having trouble removing the console plate to replace the plastic lens. The car is an auto matic and the shifter ball will not screw off all the way.

Also I need to replace the tach cable. Do i need to remove the dash to complete this task.

Regards......................Gord

What I would do is get yourself a couple of good manuals for your year Vette, including the GM service manual and a factory Assembly Manual. These will be a tremendous help to you when restoring the car. You can pick these up probably on Ebay. Good luck with the car.

The tach cable can be removed without taking the dash out. If you decide to take the dash apart, I'd go for broke and change all the bulbs, speedo cable, etc. because you won't want to do it again any time soon. Make sure you look on your firewall for holes and plug them because this will make your cabin much cooler (and smell less like partially burned hydrocarbons). I'd recommend a manual as well. Not sure about the shifter, mine came off after the appropriate amount of force was applied (with a rag to protect the finish). Good luck.

On the shifter you have to take the chrome button off before the black ball.

On my '72, you unscrew and remove the chrome button, then unscrew the shifter **** - should come off easily.
