I have an 80 and the passenger window is all the way down. When I hit the switch to roll it back up you can see a very faint glint of smoke coming through the switch. Before I take it apart this weekend, I would like to go ahead tonite and order the parts to fix it. Any idea if its the switch or harness below??? Thanks
Could be the window motor is bad, could be the gear is bound up/teeth stripped. I would take to door apart first and make sure everything is good there. In my experience the switches either work or don't, they don't smoke unless there is another problem.
I went home for 30 minutes to meet the cable man, and I took the carpet and seat out so I could get to the switch and connector. Push up on the connector and the window works fine. Let it get a little wiggle between the switch and connector, then I got smoke. The switch just doesn't seem to hold tight to the connector.
Chances are that the switch contacts are about shot. That will increase resistance in the switch and cause more heat. Replace BOTH switches while you are in there....the other is as old (and probably almost as worn) as the one giving you trouble.
Actually, both switches are only about 13 months old. The entire interior including all guages, switches, etc was gutted last year and replaced, but that switch always seemed to have a clicking problem in which it felt like it never made good contact. I plugged the connector to the other switch about an hour ago and everthing worked fine, so now I am sure its just a faulty switch. Its no big deal other than waiting on a switch to get here. I am planning on taking this car and my 1960 to Cruisin the Coast in Biloxi next week, and both seem to be giving me some electrical trouble. Always happens right before you get ready to go somewhere.
