Default Why did i get this large performance increase. long post

I have been working with pre fitting an L-88hood. And when i had the hood of, i also removed the air condition because a leak in the system.

With the aircondition out, and no hood on the car, I went for a test drive. (reason for test drive, was to check that the heater still did work after the removal of the ac)

I noticed a huge increase in the performance. I now the "butt o meter" ,is far from a accurate measurment. But belive me. The increase was huge!!!

I now that running without the hood should give me almost the same effect, as a cold air intake. And that a cold air intake is a large improvement.(that is why i am going for L-88 hood, with fresh air chamber.)But i did not expect something like this.

could someting been wrong with my ac, witch maked me remve that also notice a large "feelable" diffrence in power. ore is it youst the cold air????

Additional info: My car is a 73bb with the stock engine, heads, intake and carb. k/n air filter. TH400 automatic.

Yes... cold air equals higher density charge equals more power.

And, the AC sucks some (but not much) power even when its off.

but when it does not work. possible that it could suck more because some fault. I find it strange that i should feel this kind of power increase. to describe it. I felt more increase now, than when i changed to 3,73 rear diff.(from 3.05)

The weight of your hood missing also adds to the performance gain. Have you driven your vette recently? Maybe it's just that you forgot how it felt

I'll bet the clutch on the compressor was creating drag on the belt drive system and even when it was disengaged it was pulling and the motor was working to turn the A/C pulley.

The stock hood weight does make a difference.

Also, cold air is a bug factor. I installed a custom cold air system and felt a big difference as well.

noise is very deceptive. Just drive with uncapped headers and you would swear that you gained 100 HP.

Your hood off allows you think that you have more power. Just like the roar of the open element air cleaner

You said Huge !!! I believe since its your car you would know.I dont think any things mentioned above would be HUGE.(No offense.) Increases yes but not HUGE.
Did you do anything that would effect your choke? My thought would be that before your choke was not fully open and the carb secondary lockout lever had your secondarys locked out.It only takes a tiny bit on the choke springs part to keep the secondarys locked out.Just a thought...newly added secondarys would qualify as HUGE.

I did not exspect a huge difference either, that was why i started this post. so no offence taken.
But i really dont know what else i have been doing that could have made this increase. But i have taiken the air cleaner of and on a coupple of times.( working on l-88 hood with fresh air.) So if someting was jammed, i might have had an "axedently fix"
I deffently is going to look over the carb, and see that all looks normal, before any more driving.

I gues i will never know. I am not going to put the original hood and ac back on youst to test it.

I tink someting wrong must have been removed ore fixed, i cant see that what i have done should have made this big difference if all was normal. But i am happy anyway youst curius about what it is. dont tink i will find out for sure tough.

I deffently love the sound of the vette now. Nice to hear the k/n filter. But that does not explayning all the extra burnt rubber. (my tires life span, suddenly decreased.)
