just got the Motive bleeder in today and going to tackle a front caliper change. one question....the instructions say to pressurize tank to whats listed for the specific vehicle. can someone share with me the pressure i should raise to? btw its a 72 model with power brakes. thanks....don
I just used my new Motive on my '72 last week-end. My shop manual said to pressurize the tank to 10-20#. Quite a range. I found that 10 worked but....................be sure to screw down that master cylinder adaptor extremely well! The first step is to secure the adaptor and then pressurize the empty tank to 10# to look for leaks. Turn off your stereo and listen closely for air leaks. I had to tweak the screws several times before getting a really good seal.
Then, when you add fluid to the tank and pressurize for the bleed, be sure check closely for more leaks and keep plenty of rags around to sop up any fluid that is forced out. I know from experience! Once you get it pressurized with no leaks, the actual bleed is a breeze.
Good luck! I found that a Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA was the perfect match for this job.
think im going with the c clamp method that has been discussed in here vs the supplied j hooks. seems as if everyone who has tried it has better results. don
I didn't know about the c clamp way. I dry tested the connection at 10. No problems. Put fluid in, spewed all over. I spent less time gravity bleeding them then farting with the bleeder.
Put a block of wood (piece of 2x4) on top of the adapter and use a big c-clamp to clamp it to the top of the master cylinder. Works like a charm. The chains are a joke.

No doubt!! You will spend more time messing with those chains than you will bleeding the brakes.
I recently used the Motive after changing all 4 calipers and it worked perfectly!! I bought the pack of fluid bottles which really came in handy.

Great info! I got the Motive bleeder a couple years ago & the chains & J-hooks were useless. Haven't touched it since. As soon as I get the rotors and calipers on my 78 I will try the 2 x 4 and c clamp.
Boy - I could write a great How To book from all the tidbits I've picked up on CF!
