Default CS144 alternator wiring

Hi all,

Got the rad and spals in, finally found a belt to fit the alt etc etc just have the wiring left

I have searched the archives and cant find the thread I once saw about the wiring. Net search has thrown up some different views.

I have run a heavy gauge ground from alt case to chassis and also connected the old ground (as this runs to the forward harness).

I have run a heavy gauge + from alt to a junction box. I have connected the old charge wire to this junction box and I will run a heavy gauge + from junction box to starter (hopefully tomorrow!).

That leaves me with the plug. I know I have to connect the S and L on the pigtail adapter. S gets the red from old harness. L gets the brown. My old plug has been removed and only has spade connectors with the original wires extended without the correct colours.

I have read that the S connection needs to be looped back to the + on the alt. Do I need to do this? This red wire if you chase it back is connected with the old charge wire and hood light + in an "old style" junction (soldered splice). This old charge wire I guess already runs back to the + through the junction box.

Can anyone clarify? Just want to get it right.

Thanks guys

So far you have it under control. Don't put that jumper on there. That S terminal is for voltage Sensing in the main harness to tell the voltage regulator what to do. If you put the jumper on, it will sense output right at the alternator and maiintain the voltage setting from there, which means the voltage inside the car could be less and the alternator wouldn't care. Leaving the jumper off allows the voltage sensing to be done Inside the main harness close to the fuse block/distribution point and maintail correct voltage from there. It might not be a Lot, bit it does make a difference

Thanks 6'. Just one more thing, am I right in saying that the S wire is hot all the time and the gen light wire is hot with ign only? I just want to make sure they are the right way round as it seems someone has been at these wires at some point.
