Owning a classic Corvette is not "driving a high performance old car" to the majority of us.
The Corvette we own is the nucleous to owning an American Icon. It's a life style (meets, rallys, waving). It's an experience, a status. It's special and it needs to be treated special.
Your somewhere totally not into what owning a Corvette is, and how priveledged that should be treated.
I stand by my statement.
Reread your post. "Your somewhere totally not into what owning a Corvette is, and how priveledged that should be treated." I take offense to someone telling me or anyone else for that matter this is my belief and you need to believe it too. No one has the right to tell me or anyone else what it means to own a Corvette. I don't need to be lectured about my uh.... lifestyle. I don't need anyone telling me that I need to wave or go to meets or rallies. And I wasn't only talking about you, also everyone else who's been throwing their beliefs and opinions around when it wasn't asked for. Now it looks like you're new to the forum (and congrats on getting the car you've always wanted, that's how I ended up with mine), just be careful about what you post in a public forum.
Now I'm done with this, I'm going to go out to my car now and see if I have enough clearance for the air cleaner.

Don't forget that this is a public forum and he's not the only person reading it. By you posting that this is what you need to do or think when you own a Corvette, you are broadcasting that to everyone and there will be people (like me) that take offense to it, so be careful with what you post in a public setting.
Well I guess i started it? but didnt mean any harm or was not tryin to tell you what you could or couldnt do?
I run my 327 up to 7 grand through all 4 gears (on the country roads i live on) and thats the whole reason i bought a vette.
I did watch a buddy in high school burn down his dads vette&barn when it backfired threw one of the edlebrock (what people think of when you say flies eye) aircleaners So i have seen it first hand not just a rumor or a friend of a friend said.
there are differences to taking risks and bein retarted ask this guy!!! LOL
I thought so too when I read it in a hotroding mag, when I use to think most of the stuff they printed was worthwhile , wish I could say it's original.
I always refered to those cone shaped pieces as velocity stacks. I always saw them on race cars and show cars since there's no real filter on them. You'd see racers in the pits with tennis ***** in them to keep junk out when they're not running.
63mako,
I still have no idea how the train of thought for this thread go derailed so badly as to talk about fuel lines and why anyone is still bringing it up.
Maybe another thread should be started elsewhere title "Common Corvette Fire Hazards"

How does the air cleaner catch fire with a metal guard on top of the filter element? Does a backfire spit out the whole element? Wouldn't then a velocity stack (with no element) be even more dangerous? Not taking sides just trying to understand the logic.
I have a duel line Holley and ran all rubber hose and a glass filter before the pump, after the pump and used rubber line and a glass filter to each fuel inlet on the carb.
(PS) also am running "double stacked" Edelbrock triangle air cleaners with foam element soaked in oil to catch dust.
Question 1: My carb is back firing thru the carb at take off and high RPM, I also smell raw gas from somewhere, my mechanic looked at it and said I need a positive wire hooked to my choke housing and ground the battery cable to the manifold, will this help my transmission shift into third faster?

Tim,Tim,Tim you poor thing. Have you just been around here too long or are you in pain? Maybe a stronger hemorrhoid cream would help. Oh and to answer your shift question-probably not.
If you know of the owner, why didn't you just ask him instead of taking all this slack here
BTW, that filter looks like crap. Just my opinion, and yes I know you're not interested in any 'opinions' just answers to your questions
Because I don't know the owner. I did a search on google images for "Baldwin Motion aircleaner". I said I could try to get you in touch. I found the image moments before I posted, which means it was long after my question and all the off topic replies.
But, now on to technical issues. I've seen a lot of posts regarding hood clearance. Here's the easiest way I know to check clearance on a new air cleaner. Put an air cleaner on the engine that you know has enough clearance. Then use modeling clay on the top of the air cleaner to gauge how much clearance you have from the top of the air cleaner to the hood. Measure not only in the center but at four spots, front, back, left, and right. Then take a piece of wood (2 x 2 ) that is wide enough to span the hood opening. put equally sized blocks of wood in the left and right channels of the fenders until the 2 x 2 just clears the top of the modeling clay on the air cleaner. You now have a pseudo hood to measure newer air cleaners or other equipment ( dizzy, high rise intake manifold, etc.). Take the old air cleaner off and put the new one on and then lay the 2 x 2 on the wooden blocks and you can see how much clearance you have between the new unit and the hood. You can also use modeling clay to measure other things as I show on my webpage below.
