Just bought me a zz4, had to get the 355 hp one dont ask questions long story, but which headers/exhaust setup should I use. Right now I have the hooker side pipes...i need to find out what headers/dual exhaust i should buy...any help would be appreciated...thanks
most peope use the hooker comp headers and love them. Im using the ramhorn kind. but for my exaust, I have 2.5 inch true duels on my '77, with glass pack mufflers, and it sounds like a race car with open exaust(if thats the kind of sound your looking for). Everyone around here loves the sound of my car, and the beautiful part is it is not sonicly loud until I punch the throttle, then it shakes the ground, but under normal driving it just has a nice deep throaty open/exaust sound.
C3 congrats, on your selection of the ZZ4. Having recently installed the same in my '73, you will be happy with the increase in hp.. As for the exhaust question, the heads on this engine have a "D" shaped exhaust port unlike the oval ports on your present engine. Jim Pace http://www.paceparts.com (1.866.563.9418) and Hedman Hedders have combined to offer headers with the same configuration for these heads. They offer a set for 63-82 Corvettes for $169.95 and can even have them HTC ceramic coated for an additional $200.00. I'll have to assume these are the regular style, not for side pipe installations. I have stayed with the original style ram manifolds and have not noticed any problems... Just by installing this engine the sound was already louder than stock. I'm sure since they (heads)do differ slightly, there is slight lose of hp. If you decide to swap the engine yourself, its a piece of cake. Just beware of a couple of issues.. You will probably need another flexplate.. Also the water pump is the long style and you need the short style... You'll have to grind one of the timing belt housing bolt heads. Another issue is the water temp sensor. The size of the sensor will probably dicate relocating to another place.. such as the top of the intake manifold.. You will also need an oil filter adapter. While the engine is out, you may as well detail the engine compartment. Check out the radiator and radiator support... All kinds of little things to look into... Motor mounts, spark plug cables, cooling hoses and belts.. Good luck with your new engine and lots of fun...
