My '75 has the original tranny - works just fine - but I've had a small
tranny leak which two mechanics told me was at the linkage. But, to
get to it you have to pull the tranny - they said. Then yesterday a
very large puddle of tranny fluid on the floor - had not been driven
in two weeks. What's the best thing to do? Pull it and change the
seal (I guess rebuild it at the same time?). Or if that's expensive why
not just a new tranny with overdrive? (Engine is matching #'s but
does this make any difference having the original tranny?)
Thanks for your expertise!!!
The fluid level is close to the level of where the shift levers are. I can't see where that would creat a "puddle". If the seals for 1st - 2nd or 3rd-4th are leaking, you can just remove the shift linkage the remove the cover to replace the seals. I thought the seal in reverse could be replaced in the car. I just had my T-10 rebuilt last week - 2 teeth broke off the input shaft while cruising thru my developement at 20 MPH. The guy who rebuilt mine told me, "If there is nothing wrong with the tranny, don't rebuild it". If yours shifts OK and is not whining - save your $$$$.
As far as a valuation between original #s matching and a 5 or six speed - depends on the buyer but I think the #s matching is more desireable.
