I didn't turn up much in my search, some helpful tips but nothing specific so here goes. My mechanical tach cable broke. The end that fits into the back of the tach was so twisted up it looked like it had been machined. It was twisted perfectly. Anyway, that cable was not moving very freely in the housing at all. I got a new cable and it is very free but after hooking it up to the tach I can't turn it by hand at all. I seem to remember it turning very freely by hand before. Is it time to get the guage itself rebuilt? Perhaps something I might be able to do myself? Thanks.

Yeah, I did the install myself. And no the cable does not twist freely. My speedo guage is a bit jumpy as well, just as the tach cable was before it decided it had had enough. Might as well get em both. Winter project I suppose. I looked in a couple of catalogs and didn't find a rebuild kit. Does such a thing exist or is it as easy as going in and cleaning everything up? Thanks guys!

Sounds to me like your tach is binding up a bit. There are a number of things that could cause that. It probably wouldn't hurt, (other than taking the tach and speedo out-ouch) to have it looked at by a gauge guy.
