If you're not hot-rodding it all the time, the motor will last longer than you. I mean, if you rebuild it once every 100k miles it will always be like you have a brand new motor.
I have 300,000 on my 350 Vette right now. The engine, tranny and rear are all original and have never been out, and no major work has ever been done. I'm going for a half million right now...
your odometer still turns.? mine stripped out at 202k
i just don't get how someone can get more that 150k out of a chevy engine or tranny. I just can't fathom it at all. its way way beyond my comprehension.
you've at least replaced the valve seals.......right?

70,000 wow, can I ask what was the matter with the 70,000 mile one? were you a young buck hot rodding or was it pampered and just went out?

on that engine, i don't know how the first 36,000 miles were driven, but the last 35k or so, i drove many hwy miles (3,000 rpms) and did occasionally get down on it (kept it under 6000 rpm); it also had it's share of stop and go in town. with an automatic, there was no engine braking.
i think it was just a poor quality timing chain set . . .
I remember in the early eighties, when I was a line tech in a chevy dealer I saw alot of cam and lifters worn out at 50-60k.All of these were 305-350 from 76-80.I think they had a bad run of camshafts through those years because we were doing them under warranty and doing bunch of them. But small block chevies are bullet-proof if you take care of them.
