Default Need Ideas

I'm building a 68 roadster from the frame up. I've put composite suspension on, front and rear. I've got a competely rebuilt 396 with new headers and 2 1/2" exhaust system with an M-21 tranny in it so far. The frame is done and ready for the body but I really want a automatic with overdrive. So now.....here is where I need more input. I also have an 85 with a good L98 in it which I'm going to part out. I'm looking for a nice driving 68 that gets decent milage. I have access to aTH700R4 tranny but I've been told a 200 4R is a better choice. So if I go that route, which engine might be the best choice, the L98 or the 396. I'm building this vette to look like a 68 but drive & ride better than a 68. I'm doing this because I have another #s matching 427 68, and a76 and an 80. Anybody feel free to tell me I'm nuts or give some ideas......Thanks

The 700 will be a more stout trans than the 200, unless they are both built up for the intention of a higher HP motor.

The 200 is an easier swap into a car with a TH350. If you have a TH400 then the 700 is easier.

I like your ideas, and think a big motor in front of a built 200 is the ticket.

The 2004R has a better gear set and better overdrive. And as DB says its an easier swap, although at the point your at that doesn't matter a lot. Some of the 7004's have oil and bearing issues, early ones I think but I don't know what years.

Thanks for the input guys......It sounds like I should go with the 200. What about bolting it up the the L98 that I have in my 85 that I'm going to part out. I know I'm never going to get any kind of milage out of the 396 that is in it now. I could probably sell the 396 with the 11" clutch, pressure plate, bell housing & M21 tranny as a complete set-up to someone ! It's just a rolling frame right now so it will be easy to do anything at this point.....Keep the ideas coming....Thanks again

The motor in the '85 is just another small block so you will have no problems bolting the two together.
